Student Restaurant “Mensa am Medizincampus” Reopened

On 20 May 2019, Studentenwerk Leipzig’s student restaurant “Mensa am Medizincampus” opened its doors in attendance of Saxon Federal Minister for Science and Arts Dr. Eva-Maria Stange.

Right on time for lunch, the Federal Minister and Studentenwerk Leipzig opened the doors to the new student restaurant “Mensa am Medizincampus” for about 1,000 customers. The first guests were given free ice cream and tasters of our homemade smoothies.

With the new student restaurant and incorporated cafeteria “Mensa am Medizincampus”, Studentenwerk Leipzig provides lunch and snacks for about 7,000 students and university employees of Leipzig University’s Faculty of Medicine as well as the surrounding faculties. Two dining halls provide space for 400 guests at a time; the outdoor area provides another 84 seats.

The student restaurant menu includes a variety of main components, a pasta and salad buffet, vegetarian and vegan meals, wok and grill dishes and the “quick plate”, homemade somoothies as well as cakes, homemade cookies, muffins and much more.

The new student restaurant is open from Monday to Friday 11.00 a.m. to 2.00 p.m.; the cafeteria opens from 9.00 a.m. to 4.00 p.m.

The building of the former “Speisenversorgungszentrum” (roughly: meal supply facility) near the university hospital was built in 1988 for supplying meals to patients, employees and students. It was taken into operation in 1995. From 2015, it was rebuilt and modernized extensively under the direction of Sächsisches Immobilien- und Baumanagement (SIB) Niederlassung II Leipzig which is a public enterprise. The food supply during these construction measures was undertaken by the “Mensaria”, which is an interim restaurant situated on the new student restaurants yard.

Apart from the new student restaurant of Studentenwerk Leipzig, the building accommodates the library for medicine and sciences as well as the Faculty of Medicine’s LernKlinik (a learning center). The building thus becomes a multifunctional learning and competence center in the heart of the medical campus and unites three purposes under a single roof. In the new learning and communication center, students can stay between courses, prepare ideally for exams and also take care of their physical well-being.

The construction measure was financed entirely through tax money on the basis of the budget approved by members of the Saxon Landtag. The entire operation was realized by public enterprise Sächsisches Immobilien- und Baumanagement Leipzig. The construction costs for the entire building with library and learning center of Leipzig University’s Faculty of Medicine and Studentenwerk Leipzig’s student restaurant amounted to approx. 25.3 million euros. For Federal Minister Stange, it is an essential task of the Free State of Saxony to provide funding for an attractive and needs-based infrastructure at the various university locations in Saxony that are covered by the four Saxon Studentenwerk organisations.
