Higher Minimum Wage: These Are the Impacts on Mini-Jobs and BAföG

At the beginning of the new year, the statutory minimum wage has increased. This is noticeable, for example, for students with part-time jobs.

As of 1 January 2024, the statutory minimum wage has been increased from 12 Euros to 12.41 Euros gross per hour. This also affects students who have a part-time job and student workers in mini-jobs who receive BAföG. Here are the key points summarized:

  • No changes in the number of hours.

In a mini-job, the maximum number of hours depends on the hourly wage. Mini-jobbers who have been receiving 12 Euros per hour so far are allowed to work a maximum of 43 hours per month. Since, in line with the minimum wage, the earnings limit for mini-jobbers has also been increased to 538 Euros (instead of the previous 520 Euros), there is no change in the number of hours.

  • Effect on BAföG

Please note: The new earnings limit for BAföG will not be raised. Mini-jobbers who receive BAföG may only earn €520 per month, as before, without this affecting their BAföG.
