Students currently pay 208.80 € per semester for their Deutschland-Semesterticket. For the 2025/26 winter semester, the monthly ticket price has risen from 29.40 € to 34.80 €.
Background: The price of the Deutschland-Semesterticket is linked to the price of the regular Deutschlandticket. When the price of the Deutschlandticket increased in January 2025, the price of the Deutschland-Semesterticket automatically rose as well. Now, the state transport ministries have decided on another increase in the price of the Deutschlandticket. This means that the next price increase for students is just waiting to happen!
Critical Voices on price developments
The Deutsches Studierendenwerk (DSW) and the freien zusammenschluss von student*innenschaften (fzs) have spoken out clearly on these current price developments. Both organizations are calling for:
- Decoupling from the price of the Deutschlandticket. The semester ticket should be calculated independently.
- A reliable price cap to ensure that student mobility remains stable and fair in the long term.
We agree with these statements and support the demand for a fair and affordable semester ticket for students.
Affordable mobility at risk
The price increase and the price linkage to the Deutschlandticket are increasingly threatening affordable mobility in local public transport, which is what the semester ticket was supposed to offer.
Matthias Anbuhl, CEO of the DSW, explains what this means for students:
“The current ticket price […] already exceeds the financial limits of many students. Further price increases in public transport are no longer affordable for students in view of the rising cost of living, especially rents.”

To date, the price of the Deutschland-Semesterticket has been 60 percent of the regular Deutschlandticket price, with mandatory purchase for the respective semester by the entire student body of a university. Therefore, as the price of the Deutschlandticket increases, so does the price of the Deutschland-Semesterticket.
