Our latest survey on the income and housing situation of students in Leipzig clearly shows that affordable housing is one of the key factors for a successful degree in Leipzig. The situation is particularly strained for many at the start of their studies – publicly funded Halls of Residence are more important than ever. The survey of around 4,000 students paints a clear picture of the social reality in Leipzig as a university city.

Key findings at a glance

  • 39% of the students surveyed have a total monthly budget of up to 800 euros
  • 79% find it difficult to find affordable accommodation in Leipzig
  • 66% are concerned about rising housing costs
  • 33% cut back on everyday expenses (e.g. food or leisure activities) because of their rent

In short: housing is a source of financial stress for many students.

Student Halls of Residence as a tool for educational equity

Student Halls of Residence reach those who need them

Our Halls of Residence serve a clear social purpose. The following groups in particular often live here:

  • Students on a tight budget
  • BAföG recipients
  • International students
  • First-year students

More than half of the residents have a total monthly budget of no more than 800 euros. For this group, access to affordable housing is a matter of existential importance.

Affordable housing: a clear advantage over the market

  • 310 euros average rent for a room in a Hall of Residence (including utilities and furniture)
  • Around 100 euros cheaper than a room in a shared flat
  • Over 200 euros cheaper than a private flat

This is made possible by funding from the German federal government and the Free State of Saxony, including through the ‘Junges Wohnen’ programme.

Starting university under time pressure: Halls of Residence as a central support

Every year, around 8,000 first-year students begin their studies in Leipzig:

  • 82% are moving to Leipzig for the first time to study
  • 58% receive their acceptance letter only 1–2 months before the start of their studies

In such a short timeframe, finding accommodation quickly is crucial. The survey shows that over 50% of students in their first or second semester live in one of the Studentenwerk’s Halls of Residence.

High levels of satisfaction with the housing provision

92% of current and former residents would recommend the Studentenwerk Leipzig’s Halls of Residence. This shows that our services work – both socially and practically.

Our conclusion: Halls of Residence make a key contribution to equal opportunities. They ensure that students can begin their studies under realistic conditions and they ease the strain on the tight housing market.

Call: Continue funding

To ensure that housing remains affordable and can continue to be expanded, long-term support for construction and modernisation measures in student Halls of Residence is essential.

The survey results demonstrate the effectiveness of the funding provided by the federal government and the Free State of Saxony. The funds from the ‘Junges Wohnen’ programme are being used exactly where they are needed. Continuing this programme is a necessary investment in securing social infrastructure and equal opportunities for students in the long term.
