New photo exhibition presents Japan from two perspectives

Martin Andreas Arendt has been photographing for over twenty years. His journeys to Japan have had a particularly strong influence on him—a country that has captivated him not only as a gamer and drone pilot, but also as a photographer. During the COVID-19 pandemic, when travel was impossible, old photographs became a window into a familiar world and laid the foundation for his photo book projects.

In his current exhibition “Faces and Places,” Arendt brings together Japanese pop culture, history, and architecture: aerial perspectives meet intimate black-and-white cosplay portraits. While the drone shots offer a broad view and invite discovery, the portraits confront the viewer with direct eye contact—quiet, honest, and unfiltered. Color gives way to a focus on expression and presence.

The photos are now on display in the corridors of Studentenwerk Leipzig (Goethestraße 6) – until the end of September2025.

Fancy your own photo exhibition?

Students who would like to present their photographs in an exhibition can apply to Studentenwerk Leipzig. The theme can be freely chosen. 24 frames of 59.4 x 84 cm can be used. The exhibition spaces are located in the corridors on the first and second floors of Goethestraße 6, and the photographs are usually shown for two months.

The exhibitions are financed by Cultural Funding from the Studentenwerk.

It is important that the student photographers are enrolled at a university in the Studentenwerk Leipzig’s area of responsibility during the exhibition period.
