BAföG for students over 30

BAföG Ü30 Everything you need to know

Even if you are over 30, you can still receive BAföG – and even benefit from other advantages under certain conditions! Find out here which special regulations apply to you, how you can benefit from parent-independent funding and which allowances you are entitled to. Everything you need to know to optimise your student financing.

Parent-independent funding

  • Students who are over 30 years old at the start of their course (e.g. Bachelor’s, Master’s or State Examination) are generally funded independently of their parents.
  • Parents do not have to submit an income declaration.
  • Please note: The income of spouses is still taken into account.

First university education

  • Your degree programme will be funded if it is your first university course.
  • It is not a problem if you have completed vocational or school-based training beforehand.
  • There is also a special reason if your Master’s degree programme builds directly on your Bachelor’s degree and you have not yet completed a Master’s, Diplom or State Examination.

Age limit

  • Age limit for the BAföG application: 45 years at the start of your studies.
  • If you exceed the age limit after the start of your studies, your entitlement remains intact.
  • If there are special reasons (e.g. raising children up to the age of 14, illness), you may also be eligible for funding over the age of 45. The BAföG office will check the reasons individually.

Requirements and funding amount

  • The grant amounts to up to 1,088 Euros per month for students over 30 years of age (with their own accommodation and voluntary health/nursing care insurance).
  • In addition, a childcare allowance of 160 Euros per child up to the age of 14 can be paid (always as a subsidy).

Additional income

  • Income up to 556 Euros per month (mini-job) is exempt from deductions.
  • If you have your own child, this allowance increases by 770 Euros per child.

Capital allowance

  • Students over the age of 30 have an asset allowance of 45,000 Euros.
  • An additional 2,300 Euros allowance per child and spouse.
  • Assets such as a car, building society savings contract or owner-occupied flat are not counted if they are within the allowance.
