You’ve decided to study in Leipzig? Congratulations! Is your head spinning and you’re not quite sure where to start? The Studentenwerk Leipzig is here to support you and is on hand to help with all matters relating to your studies.
Feel free to scroll through the page or jump straight to the topic that interests you most right now:
Housing in a Student Hall of Residence
A place in a hall of residence is in particularly high demand at the start of your studies – and for many of you, it’s the first and easiest accommodation option in Leipzig. Around 50% of first-year students live in halls of residence, and 92% of residents would recommend them to others. So apply for a place in a hall of residence as soon as you receive your letter of admission and become part of the student accommodation scene in Leipzig!
If you need a different accommodation solution for the transition period, our RaumTeiler project is here to help: here you’ll find available rooms in private households in Leipzig – either to rent or in exchange for helping out with everyday tasks.
Financing for your Studies
BAföG – it sounds complicated at first, but it often isn’t at all. Many students think, “I’m not eligible anyway”, but they might actually be entitled to support. And it’s well worth it: half of the BAföG is a grant, so you don’t have to pay it back. The other half is an interest-free loan. You can apply entirely online – and it’s quicker than many people expect.
So: it’s better to check and apply than to miss out on money.
If you want to supplement your student funding, the Studentenwerk Leipzig’s Student Job Office can help you find suitable student jobs.
Mensas and Cafeterias
In Leipzig, you’ll find eight Mensas and seven Cafeterias – spread across the city and at all universities. And best of all: you can use them all, no matter where you’re studying. Whether it’s lunch or a quick coffee – you’ve got the flexibility to enjoy good, affordable food at all our facilities.
You can pay using your student ID card or a Mensa card. If you don’t want to worry about paying for or topping up your card, it’s best to sign up for AutoLoad straight away.
Counselling for all Situations in Life
Student life doesn’t always run smoothly – and sometimes you simply need people to help you. At Studentenwerk Leipzig, you can get support in specific life situations, for example if you’re a student with a child or a disability. We also offer general Social Counselling and Psychosocial Counselling if you’re dealing with personal stress whilst studying.
Whatever the issue, you’re not on your own – our Counsellors are here for you.
Support for International Students
You’re from abroad? We’re here to support you with guidance, advice and assistance on all matters relating to studying and living in Germany. Our Social Counselling provides individual, confidential support to international students at all of Leipzig’s universities, and in various languages if required.
We also provide targeted support to refugee students and prospective students as they prepare to start their studies.
The Semesterticket keeps you on the Move
With the Deutschland-Semesterticket, you can travel throughout Germany during your studies – whether it’s to university, home or on a weekend trip.
The ticket is already included in your Semester Fees and is provided to you digitally via the LeipzigMOVE app. All you need to do is activate it at the start of each semester.
