The Solidarity Principle as Foundation of the Semester Fee

Our wide range of services, is made possible, among other things, by the financial contribution made by all students. The semester fee follows the principle of solidarity: the individudual can benefit from a multitude of offers while all fund them.

Winter semester 2020/21 is already in full swing. For many students, it was the first time they paid the semester fee. But what for?

One for all, all for one. That is the basic idea behind the "solidarity principle" our semester fee is based on. Because all students contribute financially, we can in return offer our broad range of services free of charge or at a low price. This includes:

•     Student accommodation at affordable rents in our student halls of residence
•     Inexpensive meals in our Mensas and Cafeterias located throughout the city
•     Support for financing your studies and our student job office
•     Counselling and support in social matters
•     Funding for cultural projects planned by our students
•     Cheap mobility offers

The fee does not depend on whether you take full advantage of each offer. Through the joint contribution, everyone can benefit from these services – while it depends on your personal situation what offers you actually make use of. The idea or solidarity with members of the community in need of social support is the main focus, because studying in Leipzig means solidarity!

An exemption from the payment of the semster fee is therefore only granted in special cases. You can find more information on this topic here:
