The 2025 Annual Report of Studentenwerk Leipzig shows that students are facing increasing financial and psychological pressure. Although the number of students declined slightly, demand for Studentenwerk services increased in almost every area. In particular, Mensas, Student Residence Halls, Counselling Services and the Student Job Office experienced higher demand.
The high occupancy rate of the Student Residence Halls highlights the ongoing need for affordable housing. Mensas were also used more frequently. For many students, low-cost, subsidized meals are an essential part of their daily lives and financial planning. The Student Job Office also saw rising demand. More and more students rely on part-time jobs to cover increasing living costs.
The financial strain is also reflected in the Counselling Services. Financial difficulties, concerns about making ends meet, and stress-related issues were among the most common reasons for seeking support from the Social Counselling Service and the Psychosocial Counselling Service.
The findings of the annual report are complemented by the Student Housing Survey in Leipzig, conducted in November 2025, which likewise points to the challenging social and economic situation of many students.
Studentenwerk Leipzig will continue to provide and further develop its support services. These include affordable Student Housing, Counselling Services, and low-cost meals. The aim is to support students even under difficult circumstances and to promote equal opportunities in higher education.
