The information day for prospective international students took place on 30 April. Under the title ‘Start Your Studies’, around 160 visitors from a wide range of countries took the opportunity to receive personalised advice at numerous information stands.
The information day was primarily aimed at prospective students who had specific questions about applying to university, financing their studies and legal residence issues. The ‘quick check’ of university entrance qualifications offered by employees of Leipzig University and HTWK Leipzig was particularly popular.
A total of seven universities from Saxony and Saxony-Anhalt presented themselves: Leipzig University, HTWK Leipzig, HGB Leipzig, iba Leipzig, Duale Hochschule Sachsen (DHSN), Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg and Merseburg University of Applied Sciences. The offer was supplemented by stands on student financing – including from the Employment Agency, the social counselling service of the Studentenwerk Leipzig and the Guarantee Fund University. The Leipzig Welcome Centre was also represented with a stand on residence law issues.
Four student initiatives enriched the information day with a strong peer-to-peer exchange:
- WILMA – Welcome Initiative for International Students in Leipzig: offers leisure activities, excursions and cultural exchange.
- Department for International Students (RAS): supports international students with questions about studying and promotes intercultural tolerance.
- mitStudieren! Language learning centre & advice for refugees interested in studying: offers low-threshold support in learning German and preparing for university.
- Wir sind Paten Leipzig (We are Mentors) (WsP): connects people in need of support with committed helpers – many of them students.
The information day was a complete success and showed once again how great the interest of international prospective students in studying in Leipzig or the surrounding area is – and how important low-threshold, personal counselling services remain in this context.
